Great with crab or a spicy fish entrée, yet still big enough to hold up to a steak, these wines are perfect for a table that orders a few different dishes. One of my favorite wines on our menu is one from Australia that is inspired by wines from the South of France: Grant Burge “Holy Trinity.” This wine is made from three grape varietals: Shiraz, Grenache, and Mouvedre, and is an homage to the wines of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. In the 1400’s, Pope Clement V was ascended to the Papacy but did not want to move to Rome due to certain intrigues (such as potential assassination). He moved the Papacy from Rome to Avignon (a small town in the South of France) and built the New Castle of the Pope (Chateauneuf-du-Pape). He reigned for 30 years and wine for the sacrament flourished in the area. Holy Trinity, in Australia, reverentially refers to the triumvirate of grape varietals that made this area famous. In the name of the Shiraz, the Grenache, and the Mouvedre, Amen.

Spain is hot, and I’m not just talking about the weather! Many of the wines from Spain are fantastic, and an amazing value. Truluck’s currently carries eight wines from Spain by the glass and many more in the cellar. We’re focused on Spain not just because of the great value, but because the wines pair beautifully with the food at Truluck’s. We carry Spanish wines ranging from the tried and true (like El Coto, Rioja) to up and coming (Burgans, Albariño), classic (Dios Baco, Sherry), a rosé (Marqués de Cáceres), quaffable (Poema, Cava), and totally unexpected, like Elix, from Priorat. This wine is from a postage-stamp-size region just northwest of Barcelona. The region, Priorat, is only 4,151 acres (by contrast Rioja is 150,000 acres). Here the grape Garnacha is dominant, as it likes the hot weather and the volcanic soil. The grapevines here are over 100 years old, which intensifies the fruit they produce. Originally planted in the thirteenth century by monks who lived at a local Priory (thus Priorat), it was rediscovered in the 1990’s and has been producing some of the world’s best wines for the last decade, becoming the pride of Catalunya. Truluck’s proudly serves the distinctive wines of Spain. ¡Salúd!
